Incredible Impact

Early Christians knew little else but that they were followers. There were no electric guitars or dazzling experiences. Their Christian journey was just following – following that often cost them family, career, and even their lives. Yet their impact was incredible, and it wasn’t because they were persons of power and influence. In the early generations of the church, as it is today, most of the followers of Christ were just common folk, not the well-connected elite with access to the power brokers and shakers and movers. Their power and influence would be wielded in a far more strategic venue: the hearts and minds of a watching world. As persecution mounted against them from the political and religious establishments, they were unintimidated and unmoved as followers of Christ. Some died in the arena as fodder for hungry lions; others were covered in pitch and were set of fire as human torches to light the streets of Rome. The reality of a Christ worth living for – dying for if necessary – stirred the curiosity of their world.

The lifestyle of these followers was so dramatically and productively different from the people around them. They loved and cared for one another. They cared for their enemies, even the worst of them. they were selfless, sharing with each other and those in need. Politically and economically disenfranchised, they had hope and trust in a transcendent reality that left them strong in the face of poverty and persecution.

Polycarp, a bishop in the Asian City of Smyrna, faced certain death when, during the public games in February A.D. 155, the large excited crowds began to rally against him. “Away with the atheists!” they shouted, “Let Polycarp be searched for!” His whereabouts betrayed by a tortured young girl, the police came for him. Yet not even the police captain wished to see him die. On the brief journey back to the city, the captain pleaded with the old man, “What harm is it to say, ‘Caesar is Lord’ and to offer sacrifice and to be saved?”

When Polycarp was brought to the arena, the proconsul gave him the choice of death or cursing the name of Christ and making sacrifice to Caesar. The bishop’s response was that of a fully devoted follower: “Eighty and six years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?” Threatened with burning, Polycarp then helped put things in perspective for his enemies: “You threaten me with the fire that burns for a time, and is quickly quenched, for you do not know the fire which awaits the wicked in the judgement to come and in everlasting punishment.” In spite of the appeals of his persecutors, he remained immovable and was bound to the stake and set afire.

In life, Polycarp’s greatest pursuit had been Christ, even to the point of death. As the flames rose around him, he prayed his final prayer: “I bless Thee that Thou hast granted unto me this day and hour, that I may share, among the number of the martyrs, in the cup of Thy Christ, for the resurrection to eternal life.”

When asked why they were different, these early Christians testified that they were followers of the man called Christ, who gave them something so wonderful that they would never consider an alternative. Their impact was so powerful that in the fourth century the emperor Constantine recanted of his opposition and embraced Christianity, declaring it the official religion of the Roman Empire.

From that time on, the entire Western culture was shaped and formed for centuries by the power of fully devoted followers. Until just recently, our laws, art, literature, music, and mores all bore the imprint of the foundation that these followers laid.

Their legacy calls to us.

Yet, as we embark on our journey as followers of Christ, we inevitably feel insecure and vulnerable, naked and out of control. Following is always filled with a sense of uncertainty. Even so, getting to know Him as He really is proves that He is eminently worth following.

Follower come to know Him as One to whom we can trustingly submit. We find that any risk in the process of following Christ is well worth the reward. Over the last two thousand years millions have followed Him, and no one has ever ultimately been disappointed.

A Passionate Pursuit

When Christ Said, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19), He sued a specific word that underscores that followers are to embrace Him as the essence of their existence. The word literally means to “come after”. Following is a directional thing. It is to position Christ as our singular, passionate pursuit in all things. With every thought, choice, and response to life, fully devoted followers move towards proximity and intimacy with Christ.

Paul Hiebert, professor of missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, envisions biblical Christianity as a paradigm with Christ at the center. He notes that authentic followers are in the process of moving closer to Christ. Each decision moves the arrow closer to the One we are pursuing. Hiebert notes that some who have been moving towards Christ becomes distracted by some seduction, turn their arrows around, and with wrong choices grow increasingly distant from Christ. And what of us who have decided that we are close enough and simply go into orbit around Christ? This holding pattern is particularly comfortable when we note that others are orbiting farther away than we are. But to be a follower means that Christ is the all-consuming center of our experience toward whom we are moving.

Unfortunately, Hiebert notes, we have often viewed Christianity as open space defined by boundaries of rules, traditions, and doctrine. As long as we stay in the space without climbing over the walls that define Christianity, we assume we are good Christians. And while it is true that authentic Christianity has well-defined boundaries, authentic Christians do more than compliantly fill space. Christianity is more than a random racquetball experience of bouncing off walls as we are propelled through sanctified air by often conflicting influences that try to direct our Christianity experience.

Christianity is Christ at the center, with followers converging steadily toward Him within the context of legitimate biblical boundaries.

Life is like a galaxy. There is always something at the center that defines and directs everything else that moves around it. As the sun is to our solar system, so the Son should be to our existence. He is the center point that brings light, life, meaning, purpose, and direction to all we do. As the center, He defines and establishes our view of every possession and pursuit.

For many Christians, Christ is relegated to one of the tracks circling whatever it is that we have substituted for Him in the center. Whether it’s our career, our plans and dreams, money, friends, self, or a dozen other things. Christ-followers refuse to have anything in the center but Him. Our lives spiral ever closer to Him in tracks of intimacy and fellowship. The closer we get to Him as the center of our universe, the more of Him we reflect. The closer we track, the more of His justice, love, truth, patience, humility, and power is evident in our daily routine.

While true followers acknowledge Christ as the strategic center, most of us stop short of that. We are quite satisfied to relate to Him; accept His liberation from hell; praise Him; find comfort, solace, and joy in Him; and be intrigued by Him. But few are bent toward following Him unconditionally. And that makes all the difference in the world – in our own little world and the larger world around us.

Accepting the Challenge

It is not that we have not heard that intriguing call , “Follow Me.” It is not even that we do not believe in and admire the One who calls. Our struggle is that it is just plain difficult to be a follower. In a world consumed by leadership, independence, and self-led living, it is so tough to find volunteers who will even admit that they want to be followers. We get and give the impression that followers are limp, vulnerable, weak, controlled by others, and lacking in initiative.

Growing up hasn’t changed our perception of the difference between leading and following – only now it’s not a game, and the stakes are high. All of life and its outcomes rise and fall on whether or not we will choose to be the leader of our own destiny or a follower of someone wiser and better fit to lead. Unfortunately, when it comes to the life choices that matter most, we resist yielding control. We don’t want to give the impression that we are unable to figure out life for ourselves. Like men who refuse to stop and ask directions when they are lost, we fear that others will think we aren’t wise and strong.

Or perhaps it’s just our “want-tos” that lead us astray.

In the face of our resistance to being vulnerable, Christ calls us to come after Him. He calls us to count ourselves singularly, wholly, and without compromise fully devoted followers of Him – not as a part-time expression of, or add-on to, our Christianity, but as the all-consuming center point of our existence. Yet this tension between the call of Christ and our resistance to following puts the experience and expression of authentic Christianity in jeopardy.

Christianity is Christ

The struggles that put followership in jeopardy are not uncommon. Yet at the core of it all, it is not a struggle with rules and regulations. The issue is something far more significant, more compelling. Following Christ is a relationship that drives and defines all we are and do. In fact, that’s what I (author) love about followership. It’s not a project. It’s a Person. It’s a relationship to a Person who perfectly loves and cares for us and who is wise beyond comparison – a Person who has done so much for His followers that they look for ways to please and obey Him.

Followership would be drudgery and dull if it were nothing but an obligation to fulfill or a list of rules to keep. We don’t find joy and fulfillment in a good marriage because of the institution of marriage, the laws that govern it, or the tax breaks for filing jointly.

If Christianity is dull and boring, if it is a burden and not a blessing, then most likely we are involved in a project, not a Person – a system, not a Saviour, rules rather than relationship.

Followership is not a religious thing, a list of rules, a host of rituals, a philosophy of life, or the best choice among other possible lifestyle. Authentic followers do not live for liturgy or liberation. Following is not a celebration. It is not contemporary or traditional. It is not jubilant dance or compelling drama. It is not preaching. It is not praising. It is not obeying or conforming.

It is Christ, and Christ alone.

All the rest is because of Christ and for Christ.

We are prone to embrace the forms and functions as though they were the essence. But they are only the expression; He is the essence.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote,

Discipleship means adherence to Christ….An abstract Christology, a doctrinal system, a general religious knowledge on the subject of grace or on the forgiveness of sins, render discipleship superfluous…. Christianity without the living Christ is inevitably Christianity without discipleship, and Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.

Mirrors in Motion

Fully devoted followers are like mirrors in motion. By the very definition of following, we are called into a deepening intimacy with Christ. This increasingly close proximity to Christ transforms us and results in a clear reflection of His character. As followers we replicate the grace, mercy, love, justice, compassion, truth, and righteousness of Christ our leader. Followers refuse to be satisfied just to be saved and on their way to heaven. For followers, Christianity is a relationship, an adventure, a passionate pursuit of Christ. Followers escape the boredom and drudgery of a system or rituals and regulations and revel in the discovery of this intriguing Person.

As followers we a re liberated from religious traditions and conventions that do not reflect the perspective, character, and conduct of Christ. Although we may hear a multiplicity of voices from both within and outside the church, we listen to only one. It is the voice of Christ, who simply said, “Follow Me.” No conditions. No negotiations. No particulars. No contractual expectations. Just follow. It was the first and last thing Jesus said to Peter (Mark 1:17; John 21:19,22). It is the beginning and the end of what it means to be a Christian. Everything in between is measured by it.

Followers are free – free to be what they were intended to be, free to experience life the way it was meant to be.

Unfortunately, we don’t readily perceive ourselves as followers. When we identify ourselves, it is most often with terms such as “Christian,” “believer,” “brother” or “sister”. To say, “I am a Christian,” focuses our attention on our privileges and entitlements. Or, perhaps it is simply a way to differentiate ourselves from other kinds of people. For some it means little more than not being a Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist. The title itself does little to forge a sense of calling, action of definition of what being a Christian is all about.

As good and important these identities may be, at some point we have to get beyond these labels to a self-perception that will demand the right stuff of our lifestyle. Identifying ourselves as followers captures the essence of what it means to be a believing Christian. Think of the difference it would make if we answered the questions about who we are by saying, “I am a follower of Christ.” Calling one another “follower” would draw out both encouragement and accountability. Thinking of ourselves as followers keeps our focus on Christ and holds us accountable for how we live.

Yet, in a strange, twisted sort of way, many of us live out our faith in Christ as though He exists to follow us. We come to believe that Christ exists to satisfy our demands. Distorted perceptions of Christianity pose the power of faith and prayer as instruments designed to get Christ to serve our impulses for peace and prosperity. This disguised form of self-serving religion sets Christ up as just one more commodity in life that will enhance and empower our dreams and destinations.

Following Christ – Joseph M. Stowell Part 1

I’m currently reading this book called ‘Following Christ’ by Joseph M. Stowell. It was a book given to me during my 21st birthday last year, and it took me this long to actually open the book and read it, and let me tell you this: The 1st 6 pages of the book is all – OUCH.

Ouch because the things the author wrote in the book is all so relevant about what a Christian life really should be. The following paragraphs below are taken from his book:

“Gandhi was asked by a closed friend, ‘If you admire Christ so much, why don’t you become a Christian?’ He reportedly replied, ‘When I meet a Christian who is a follower of Christ, I may consider it.’

Mao Tse-tung came to America as a university student, intrigued by Christianity and Western culture. But after encountering several Christians and our brand of Christianity, he became disillusioned and turned his heart towards Marxism. We all know the rest of the story.

It seems to me that this is not what Christ had in mind when He said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Something significant has happened since Christ issued that call nearly two thousand years ago. We have become quite happy to call ourselves Christians with little or no thought of following. As a result, we are paying dearly through a lost of fulfillment, personal satisfaction, and our impact on our world.

It is not that we have denied Christ or even that we have done horrible things. In fact, most of us have mastered the codes of conduct and rituals of our religion. The problem is, we have masqueraded Christ with our own ways. When non-Christians see us, they see more of our distorted portrayal of Christianity than they do a clear reflection of the character and quality of Christ.

Too often we have graffitied the face of Christ. His image becomes clouded by our prejudices and preferences. Apart from our activities on Sunday and our conformity to external codes of dos and don’ts, the world doesn’t notice much difference between us and people who don’t claim to be Christians. All they see in Christianity is the loss of a day of leisure on the weekend and the denial of common pleasure. Nor does it go unnoticed that many professing Christians manifest as much greed, self-centeredness, materialism, anger, aggressiveness, and sensualism as the average pagan on the street.

Our record on issues that relate to racial prejudice and cross-cultural sensitivity is especially poor. While we rightly lift a prophetic voice against moral ills such as abortion and homosexual behaviour, we are strangely silent on issues that touched the heart of Christ – the poor, oppression and injustice.”

Greatest Love Story

Don't we all just love a nice love story? Romeo and Juliet, a classic for the ages. Titanic, highest-grossing movie of all time (if you account for inflation). Twilight (bleh), a hit among tweens. all these work, why? Because they all are centered around the theme of romance.

One of the most touching lines a person can say to his loved one is "I will die for you". This is best exemplified in the song "Grenade" by Bruno Mars. "I'll catch a grenad for you... I'll jump in front of a train for you.... etc. etc." Sacrifice is part and parcel of true love, dramas have told us as much.

However, how many times do we actually hear such incidents happen in real life? Well yes, Wendi Deng literally leapt to the defence of her husband Rupert Murdoch. But someone giving up his or her life for another? An organ maybe, but not so much a life.

All these just serve to show how much God truly loves us. John 3:16, we quote that verse so many times it is automatic, but do we realise just how significant that verse is? Jesus died on the cross, the worst kind of death possible. For us. Us mere mortals. Think about it.

If God can send His son to die on the cross for us, we can trust that He cares about every other aspect of our lives. Therefore, do not worry, for God will not leave you nor forsake you.

Yes We Can

Many a times we wonder if we are ever going to be good enough in what we are doing. We watch Cobus on Youtube and wonder if we can ever drum as well as him. We watch our friends play basketball and wonder just how much it will take to match their standards on the courts. We hear about the results others achieve in school and wonder whether we are hit the books more.

We all strive to be the best in whatever fields we are interested in. But sometimes, we just do not see the progress we are making, we start questioning whether it is worth it putting in all the effort when no results are shown. But actually, we have no need to worry. Why? God almighty is in charge. He is the boss.

We must understand that it is God who made us. Even before we were formed in our mothers' womb, God already knew us. He knows the number of strands of hair on our head. If He gave us the interest to pursue certain hobbies/activities, would He not also provide us with the necessary skills? In Exodus 4:10-12, in response to Moses' uncertainty about his ability to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt, God said: "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord?" Indeed, it is God who gave us the hands to play guitar, drums, basketball, whatever. It is God who gave us the brains. Galileo Galilei, an emminent scientist, once said: "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reasoning, and intellect has intended for us to forgo their use."

What is more, we can count on God to help us. We have the Holy Spirit with us. Just as how God sent His angel ahead to find a wife (Rebekah) for Abraham's son Isaac in Genesis 24, we can also trust that God will send his angel with us and make our journey a success (Genesis 24:40).

So what is stopping you now?

I Wish~

Many of us would find it incredibly convenient to have a magic genie, granting us 3 wishes. Then we could have had it all..... rolling in the deep...... But seriously. Imagine what you could do with 3 wishes...

Those who are business-minded will wish for even more wishes, though I'm quite sure genies are not that simple-minded, they will sure attach some conditionalities to the 3 wishes in the first place. Those who are selfless will wish for world peace. Those who are poor will wish for more money. Those lonely, companion. Those homeless, family.

Wouldn't a genie make everything better? But we all know that genies don't exist. However, we do know that God exists!!! And isn't that better news?

Genies only give us 3 wishes. God gives us unlimited opportunities to pray. Genies will grant whatever we wish. God grants us whatever is best for us. Genies are just fictional magical beings. God is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent. Need I say more?

James 5:16 states that "The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results." 1 John 5:14 - "We can be confident that He will listen to us whenever we ask Him for anything that is in line with His will."

Finding Your Way (Part 2) – Perseverance with a Capital P

Experiencing power in prayer often has to do with perseverance. God’s answers do not always come quickly. Scripture commands us to continue praying until the situation is resolved: “Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuation in steadfastly in prayer” (Romans 12:12)

The challenge to continue in prayer is a most difficult undertaking for some believers. But those who take up the gauntlet and continue to pray always receive an answer. Persevering faith enables us to continue in prayer. If we believe God and His Word, we never give up praying. However, if we harbour unbelief in our heart, we will easily give up when there appears to be silence from heaven.

Have you ever felt you had a problem or trial that was impossible to correct? God takes the impossible situations in our lives and by His power makes them right. Perhaps you have a besetting sin that you feel helpless to conquer. God’s power smashes habitual sins into pieces. Maybe you hare in the midst of a dire situation that you feel is unbearable. God turns disaster into wonderful blessings and mighty testimonies. Perhaps a loved one for whom you have been praying for many years still has not come to the Lord. The is nothing God cannot do. His power is not something that He holds back from us; instead, we need to access it. Tap into it. Keep on praying. God’s timing is perfect. He will answer.

I’m reading this book on ”Finding Your Way” by Gary Laferla and in a particular chapter, he wrote on this area, that required me to read twice before deciding to post this up. Thing is, it struck me the first time, but I didn’t have time to blog, so here I am, sharing this with all of you. Here goes:

John 15:7 “But if you stay joined to Me and My Words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted!”

You may have noted that there is a condition to unlocking the power of prayer. Jesus said, “If you stay joined to me…” The word JOINED is also rendered “abide” and means to stay in a certain relationship. The condition to receiving answers to prayer is to be joined to Jesus in a close relationship. Jesus went on with the condition saying, “… and [if] My Word remain in you…” God’s Word is vital to you prayer life and influences your daily life. Jesus taught Hid disciples these two conditions for receiving answered prayers: Stay close to Me and let My Word be the central focus of your life. He ask us as well to meet these two conditions for answered prayer. If they are met, our prayers will be in accordance with Hid purposes and we will receive what we have asked for, according to His will.

Jesus said, “Until now you have asked nothing in My Name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:24). Asking in Jesus’ name means to ask in accordance with His nature, purpose, and divine will.

When we go to God in prayer and ask for something in Christ’s name, we are saying, “Will you attach Your Name to my desire?” Whether the desire is a new purchase, business venture, relationship, or idea, God will answer – according to His will.

You and I need to understand that not everything we desire is within God’s will for our lives. God will grant only those request that are in keeping with His divine will. We often think that we know what’s best for our lives, but it is the Lord who knows what will bring us true joy and fulfillment. When we walk through this world abiding by God’s will, we experience abundant life.

Revolution: Testimony from Sam Y Lo! Part 3!

As part of the Recess Revo movement, our very own Sam Y Lo gave another, another testimony! Here here here, check it out!

Hey people! :)

Today was the official teachers' day celebration because the exams were over and after praying last week, we felt God pushing us to do something for the celebration!
So God planted in the ideas and we decided to print out bookmarks and order some cupcakes(which eventually turned out as Muffins HAHA) and distribute them to ALL our teachers!
And trully, God has been with us the whole time! :)

Me and Josh at first had some difficulty gathering people to help out but, man, God works in wonder-est of ways!
Throughout the week, we just managed to share what God had put in our hearts with some friends and WOW the volunteers just flooded in!
From a mere number of 5 or 6, on the Thursday when we were cutting the printed bookmarks and tying the ribbons we had 13 people in total helping out! And 3 of them were NOT CHRISTIANS! Seeds were sown as they understood and wanted to be a part of what we were doing! We had a good time preparing and we cut out and made ready all 130 bookmarks in less than two hours! All glory to God! The design of the bookmark is posted with this story, and on the behind we wrote a note : 'From the CF of SMI with <3, God Bless! :) ' Believe it spoke volumes!

Credits to Josh who ran around town the night before searching for places to print the bookmarks but found non because everything was SO Expensive. By faith he went home with the glossy paper he bought and printer it with his printer! It came out AWESOME! Praise the Lord! He even went to make sure the cupcakes were halal in mind of #someoftheteachersthatwouldmindifitsnothalal ! HAHA.

So we gathered at around 7 for our usual morning prayer and 12 people turned up to help distribute the stuffs to the teachers! We prayed and then briefed everyone and made sure that everyone put on a bright smile! :)) We divided into 6 different pairs, and got our instructions where to give out and the other details. After another round of briefing, we went on to pray with each of our partners to grant us boldness and words of encouragement for our teachers.

After prayer, we waited in the hall til the time when they would open the assembly to people who wanted to give gifts to their teachers.
To our surprise, only the Prefectorial Board was the only people giving out Gifts to teachers!
We move out and our gifts really plastered smiles on the teachers faces! It was scary at first for most of us, but after their response we grew more confident and the words to encourage each teacher just flowed! After distributing during assembly, me and Josh went to scout the school for the remaining teachers who might have purposely want
to skip the 'boring' teacher's day celebration.
Sure enough we found some teachers in the staffroom working!

So we went up to each of them giving them a bookmark and a muffin each and we came to this particular teacher who was watching us when we offered to clean the whole lowerform6 block with some other guys and girls during the first week of orientation.
And we just extended warm smiles and wished her Happy Teacher's Day! And before she even looked at what we were giving, she said, thanks, You guys are from the Christian Fellowship right? And we were stunned for the moment because she was from the Majority race and that our CF was pretty much a lil unknown! We said yes and she smile back and said Thank You. We were like WOW! We were glad that Jesus is getting recognition!

The both of us went on to the office, and since we had so much more muffins, we decided to bless the office staffs and the security guards! Their faces lit up when we offered the Muffins to them and they were even more happy when we told them it was Cheese Muffins! Haha.

We gathered together again, all pumped up and glad that what we had set out to do had been accomplish! At the end we prayed and Gave thanks to the Lord for without Him we couldn't have got everything done!

Most of the teachers were surprised and at the same time happy that we took the step to do something for them. My class teacher were all thanks when she stepped in after recess and we got comments from teachers like, 'why don't the other societies and bodies do stuffs like this? Thanks You guys' and 'Where did you get these muffins? Its super nice!'

We thank God for He is GOOD!

At the end of the day, All glory and praise to Our God who is Love! :)

Besides just staying in the confined four walls of our beloved church, sometimes we do go out of the church. Oh, you didn't know ah? Ok, you learn something new everyday ya. Normally we meet on Saturdays and Sundays at a certain time but out outside of that we also meet at other times. You know why? Because we're that close, man. After the CGBC Youth Camp 2010, you know what we did? We went back to Ipoh! That's right! Then during the subsequent weekends, there was an announcement during youth meeting in church. (January 15 2011)

The announcement was that Doreen will change her name to Esther. No-lah, just kidding.

It was some sort of a hand-over announcement thingy. (The writer was not so sure coz he wasn't there and he is kinda lazy to ask around of what happened).

Hey again! School has been awesome so far! Excited for what is to come! :) Been seeing some of the CF members catching the vision! Praying for it to spread like wildfire!

Well it was Teacher's Day, but they never did have any real celebrations but just read-out from letters from the men in power from the education department during assembly due to the on going exams. The teachers looked like they couldn't be bothered by what was being read out to them. In my heart, i thought, man, they deserve better! So i decided that i would greet every teacher i see Happy Teacher's Day! So i did!
And guess what among all the teachers that i wished, ALL OF THEM had smiles plastered on their faces! Some were shock that there were actually people bothered to wish a teacher on teacher's day!
Though it was something small, but i believe that seeds were planted!

Blast from the Past - Taiping Zoo!

On a fine hot Saturday some time this year, before today's date, a few of us ~~monkeys~~ youths took a trip to the Taiping Zoo!

Took the 10:30 train down town...

When the train conductor realized that none of us had paid for tickets, we had to take a walk.

Since some of us carried a camera, we decided to take a few pictures of some monkeys. Before that, we took a picture of a few humans first. (you thought I was referring to the above photo subjects as monkeys? never read finish one you...)

Now, this was the monkey I was referring to. His name is Mike, the Overweight Orangutan.

They were happy. There were trees. And they were friends. HAPPY TREE FRIENDS.

"Hello, can I speak to [insert name of somebody from CGBC Youth here]?" asks Timothy.

Now, let's take a look at some of the memorable animals that we saw.

So our youths (+ 2 leaders) decided to clap hands to the swan, deaf and mute style. (true story) (note that the swan is in the background)

Since no feeding of monkeys were allowed, they decided to feed themselves.

We happened to know a friend who works there so they allowed us to take home two monkeys! Now they are part of our youth!

After Blessing The Vietnamese Service

This time we did something special that is out of the ordinary that we usually do. We blessed the Vietnamese service on Sunday night with our Easter Performance! Woohoo! Sure do hope they were blessed because we felt even more blessed-er!

No pictures to show here coz basically they were all the same as the earlier posts. What was different was after the whole event! We had FUN! FUN! Chee Cheong FUN! Char Hor FUN! Kai Si Hor FUN!

You must be thinking "wahlau.... so many posts about the Easter thingy. the youth got no other activities meh?" Well..... whattodo. So many nice handsome and pretty photos to choose from. Hard to narrow down leh. ;P

Youth Easter 2011 - Part 4: The Dances

(This event actually takes place before Part 3, somewhere during the middle of Part 2. Because chronology isn't widely practiced. Yet.) Here you go the dancers! I call them the Red Shirt Dancers because they wear red shirts and they, erm, dance. The inspiration for the color code definitely did not come from a series of public protest/demonstration that recently happened at a neighboring country up north.

Youth Easter 2011 - Part 3: The Sketch

Continued from Part 2.

THE SKETCH

The sketch! Oh, the sketch! Did you know they prepared the sketch with only less than a month before? Trust me, if you were there, production truly felt like it took more than that period! Praise God for all that talent!

The director was Kit, Song Wai Kit. Since I have yet to receive the soft-copy of the script from him, I will just try my best to re-script the original script to the nearest scripted script.

"The story begins as Eugene Goh and June Ling being Vincent's daddy and mummy (respectively).

The daddy works in an office where ties are compulsory to be worn. Shirt tucking-in is optional. The daddy is so busy tying ties every day, he has no time for his sonny Vincent. Poor Vincent.

The mummy is a housewife because she wears an apron. Everyday she sits at home and she waits for the husband to come home so that they could argue. She doesn't even have time to straighten the table cloth, so you think she has time for her sonny Vincent? Poor Vincent.

Everyday Vincent sees the parents arguing so he gets sad. So sad coz when the parents argue, they don't even realise Vincent is there. Like Vincent is a breeze passing by. Poor Vincent.

Luckily, Vincent goes to the BEST SCHOOL IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD™. Still, the students and his so-called friends ignore him and bad-mouth him behind his back. Poor Vincent.

In the absolution of heavy confusion, zero-food consumption, random assumptions, extreme emotions, mind pollution, intolerable depression and totally no solution, Vincent is driven to sit on a very small chair with only one thing left to do - to wipe out all his worldly infirmities (via extermination of head dandruff, symbolically)

Satan is at its best when he sees someone falling and therefore influences 2 badly influenced influencers to influence Vincent to turn to unholy ways to cast out his depression. These two naughty fellas are Eugene Lau and Jerome*.

* No surname required because there's only one Jerome here.

Whilst smoking their chocolate Rocky sticks, the naughty fellas go to Vincent and gives him the so-called solution to all his problems. Vincent's eyes open like he won the first prize in the National Lottery Competition.

"First we need to go to CC (Cybercafe) and play CS (Counterstrike)", says one of the naughty fellas. Within a few weeks, Vincent became a master at the game. Some new confidence was found and he slowly starts to forget his woes and sadness in the past. One of the beginnings to the ends of his life was just starting.

"Next, let us have a good time at the pub!" Then came the deadliest of life-enders for Vincent.

The two naughty fellas are excelling at their jobs when a girl with black long hair, black high heel shoes and dress and a pair of black shades. Her name is Jo Ee by the way.

For the first time in his life, Vincent felt what he thought was the feeling of love.

Then Jerome whispered something into Jo Ee's ear. Something that none of us know. Not even the director, Song Wai Kit knows what was whispered.

Somehow that whisper had an effect. In no time, Jo Ee and Vincent - they had become a couple.

All the times spent together that had meant the world to Vincent. All the shopping, the dining and the movies. Vincent found new hope!

All these that mattered the world to Vincent meant nothing to Jo Ee. In no time, she leaves him. The 2 naughty fellas were just trying to use him to buy things for Jo Ee!

They took a piece of his world with them.

And Eugene Lau takes all the shopping bags with him.

Vincent's world falls even harder. It falls even faster. Just like what you and me have had experienced at least once or twice in our lifetime. Rejection. Lies. Loneliness. No worldly things can help us overcome all these painful truths in life.

There is only one answer.

Youth Easter 2011 - Part 2: The Worship and The Message

Continued from Part 1.

THE WORSHIP SESSION

As soon as the ice breaker session was over, all ices were broken, melted and there were waters on the floors everywhere. Thus we needed to divert their attention by singing songs of praise and worship. It was led by Eugene Goh and His Team of Guys and Gals Who Can Play Musical Instruments and Sing!

What proceeded in the series of events were a sketch, a mime and a dance. We'll put that in Parts 3 and 4. Because chronology isn't widely practiced. Yet.

The sketch drew much varied emotions from the audience. Laughter, anger, joy, sadness, feelings of injustice, and you name it, they might have it. The dance by the Red Shirt people channeled much energy onto the audience, readying them for the main course of the night: the Message.

We invited Pastor Elijah from Church of Praise Ipoh to speak.

THE MESSAGE

Praise God and Hallelujah! Many lives were touched and saved! Many gave their hearts to Jesus and many came out for altar calls to receive further touch and blessings. It was indeed a Victory and THERE IS HOPE IN CHRIST JESUS.

A little update about RR in AMC, Ipoh.

Our CF had easter celebration on 23/4/11. Praise God our meeting was not disrupted on that day as the school suddenly made it a non-cocuriculum day due to exam. THe information did not reach my ears so we had easter celebration!

We shared about the true meaning of Easter. Praise the Lord that there was 7 non-christians there. Some became interested in Christianity & even accepting Him.

Youth Easter 2011 - Part 1: Before It All Began

On April 23rd 2011, we had a fantastic celebration at the church. The fantastic-ness was due it being very blessed in all angles possible. Fortunately all these angles were captured digitally by a few armed personnel (that is, armed with cameras). Therefore we present to you the Part 1 of the photo journey. Enjoy!

The church gradually anticipated the gathering of peoples into the auditorium. Whilst waiting, Adrian Lai took some shots of the anticipation.

Four different groupings - 1st Quarter (Jan, Feb & Mar), 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The objective was to fix jigsaw puzzles.

Revolution: Testimony from Sam Y Lo!

As part of the Recess Revo movement, one of the responses we have from Ipoh is from none other than our very own Sam Y Lopez! Here here, check it out!

" Hey guys! Just here to share a lil something:)

Today was actually the first day back in school for me and my bestfriend, Josh Loo. We were supposed to report at school at 9am but the both of us decided to go early at 7 to join our daily CF prayer. Haven't been there since we left school after Spm, but at least there were still people gathering at that same place to pray. We were also really encouraged to see new faces from those in form3! Got to know them and prayed along with them :)

After prayer me and Josh went for breakfast and the rest of the prayer group had to go to class for their exams(its midyearexamperiod). We met our old CF teacher and we had a good time catching up. He encouraged us alot too :)

After breakfast, we walked around cause we had some time to kill before registration started. And we noticed many new faces from many different schools coming to sign up for Form6. And we also saw that no Michaelian actually bothered to talk to them or tell them where to wait and all. We felt prompted to just go up to the newcomers and just welcome them and make friends!
So the both of us did just that and we got to know some guys from JPP and SamTet which felt really awesome! The guys really responded well and we struck conversations almost immediately!
We went on welcoming whoever we could and if possible just shake their hands and get to know where they were from and all.

I'm excited for even more! AMEN!

Just to kickstart things off, here are some photos from the Easter Sunday Youth Ballet Dance Show That Features Four Girls in Black. If my memory serves me right, the date was April 24 2011. (If my memory serves me wrong, then it was February 29 1999.)

For those having their holidays currently, have a HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

You all deserve a break from the toils of school and studies =) but do take care of your safety during this period.

And as we take care of our physical body, do also take care of your spiritual body. continue to practice our faith in God, our almighty Father. For with faith only comes true peace, the peace of God which will "guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7b)

Anyway, do make use of this break to recharge and energise yourselves for the challenges that lie ahead =)

CGBC Youth wishes Malaysia a HAPPY NATIONAL DAY!!!

In the national day message, PM Najib said that the time had come for the current generation to take the lead to propel the country to greater heights. Similarly, what better time is it than now for this current generation of CGBC YOUTHS to take the lead for Jesus, our Almighty God?

How exactly do we do that? We will need to worship God, not only just in church every Sunday, but every day, in our daily life. God is not interested in religious pageantry and ceremony, but He is concerned with LIFE. Hebrews 13:9b says "It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them." Christianity is not a matter of externals but a matter of the heart.

So even as we go about our daily life, remember that we are to continue practising our faith. Hebrews 13 also teaches us to "keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it." (v1-2)

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." - James 1:27

Sermon From Singapore #2

Hey all,

Just wanted to share what Pastor Dave Mann (Bartley Christian Church) spoke to us about because I feel that this is something very relevant to us youths, and applies to our daily life.

One of the most complexing passage of the Bible is Genesis 22, about how God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. Now people ask, why would a loving God, whose love is the biggest love of all, ask someone to sacrifice his loved one? After all, Isaac is Abraham's one true son (vs Ishmael). Below are some points to show why.

Firstly, God knew what He was asking. That's quite duh right, I mean, God is omniscient, that's a well-known fact. Now that we have established that, we look at Abraham's unquestioning obedience. In Genesis 22:3, we read that his reply was immediate, he set off "early the next morning".

Now Abraham believed that Isaac would be raised (from the dead). After all, God promised earlier that "through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned" (Genesis 21:12). He told his servants that "WE (i.e. Abraham & Isaac) will come back to you" (Genesis 22:5). We can see this reasoning in Hebrews 11:17-19 too. Abraham knew God's promise, he just did not know how God was going to fulfill His promise, but through FAITH he followed His command.

This leads us to the next point. This is actually a phophetic prefiguring of Jesus' sacrifice for the world. God asked Abraham to go to Mount Moriah, which would later become Jerusalam, and the place where Jesus died on the cross. God will sacrifice his one and only son, Jesus. And just as Isaac carried the wood for the sacrifice (Genesis 22:6), Jesus carried the cross.

Finally, we look at what came out of all these. The result was blessings came to Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 22:17-18). God intended to bless Abraham from the very beginning. Consider this, whose benefit was the whole thing for? Did God need to test Abraham to make Himself sure? God already knew what was in Abraham's heart, He is omniscient, after all.

How do we apply all these to ourselves? The reason we struggle in life is because we doubt. We cannot understand everything (Abraham did not have all the answers). And the key to all peace in all things is to trust in God. And this trust has to be surrendered/unconditional trust. Then we go through a journey (Abraham to Mount Moriah) in which we need to re-establish a view of God that is bigger than the view of our problems. We must choose to release our burdens to God and worship Him for who He is.

So remember, when times come and we get confused, instead of questioning God, we need to get our mindset right and trust Him instead.

Prayer Request

Hey all CGBC Youths,

As some of you may have known by now, one of our brothers in Christ is currently lying in the hospital receiving treatment for a broken leg.

Samuel Lopez injured his leg while playing soccer on Sunday. He got tackled and fell awkwardly, breaking his right fibula (lower leg bone) and tearing a few ligaments too. He just had his operation today and is currently recuperating. He will probably remain in the hospital for a couple more days.

Please keep him in your prayers so that he will get well soon and continue praising and serving the Lord.

Sermon from Singapore

Hey everyone, Joel here from Singapore. Just want to share what I got from today's sermon in Gospel Light Christian Church with you all. The speaker was Pastor Les Heinze from Red Rocks Baptist Church, Colorado (http://www.redrocksministries.org/).

It centers around the story of Joseph, Genesis 42 - 50. As most people know, Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers (Genesis 37:28), sent into prison by Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39), yet in the end became in charge over the whole land of Egypt. In many ways, Joseph is like a face of Jesus, betrayed by close people (Judas), but became the saviour of the land, Joseph saved Egypt and possibly the surrounding countries from the famine (Genesis 41).

From the story of Joseph, there are 3 lessons to be learnt.

Firstly, it is not what you remember, but what you choose to forget.
Joseph had all the reasons to not help his brothers when they came to ask for food. He had the power to refuse to grant them any grain, but he didn't do as such. Before they even went to Egypt, Joseph had already forgiven them of the evil they have done agaisnt him. In fact, he named his firstborn Manasseh, which means forgetting (Genesis 41:51). If he had kept all the hatred in his heart, hatred of people who have done him wrong, not just including the brothers, he wouldn't have been able to save the land of Egypt.

Secondly, it is not what you achieve, but what you become.
Joseph probably had the worst imaginable career track, from shepherd, to house slave, to dungeon dweller, and to prime minister (or something like that). Not a career path many of us would wish for, well, maybe the last part =) but anyway, through all these, Joseph still worshipped God, and God blessed Joseph. In Genesis 39:5, God blessed the household cause of Joseph, in Genesis 39: 21, the Lord was with Joseph and granted him favour in the prison warden's eyes. In everything we do, we need to be Christ-centered, and God will bless us in return.

Thirdly and lastly, it is not how high you climb, but how low you bow.
In other words, it is not ability nor tenacity, but humility before God. Joseph had skills, God gave him the gift of intepreting dreams, but when Pharaoh asked for him, his reply was this, "I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires." (Genesis 41:16) He could have said to Pharaoh, "I'm the best person to do this, I'm your man, without me, you will fail etc. etc." but he didn't, he gave all glory to God. We need to stop being a glory-grabber, but be a glory-giver. It is said for a fruit tree, the most laden branch (means branch with most fruits) bows the lowest.

Ending off with this simple piece of verse

Genesis 50:20
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Hopefully this has been an inspiration, and here's wishing everyone all the best for the week ahead. Remember, people may do you wrong, but God always do you right.

When School Becomes a fear...

School has officially STARTED!
Bad news to most eh... It was the same for me but it turn out to be a blessing instead.

Sunday night, the night before school. I was going through so much emotions. Bad one's though kind of because of the resposibilities ahead and well basically school...
Knew I needed to start my revisions cause this is a tough year ahead, yet this emotions keep distracting me and i felt so uncomfortable. So opted to turn to the Lord. Spend some quiet time with Him and He gave me this

"Have I not commanded you? Be STRONG and COURAGEOUS. Do NOT be terrified; do NOT be discouraged, for the LORD your God WILL be with you WHEREVER you go."

I was soo soo encouraged. Just what I needed to be strong and courageous! And most IMPORTANTLY He reminded me that WHEREVER and i mean WHEREVER I go HE is with me and He is with you too! Let noone discourage you as school resumes. For the Lord is with you. He will deliver you, He is your assurance and as Aunty Esther proclaimed, "This is the year of ABUNDANCE!"

The Favour of the Lord is upon YOU!

2009 has been a great year. AWESOME, don't you think?

As we look back, here are some of the great things that has happened to our youth.

We had our easter dance performance......

We had several guests, Mr. Alan Collingwood etc. and of course, the cool people from YWAM!!!

We even had some of our youths going back to their roots, the place where it all started, KKC (King's Kids' Church) and gave their testimonies.

On another note, there will be water games during the camp, so do bring DARK, CAN-BE-DIRTIED OUTFITS =) Don't worry, we promise you are going to have a lot of fun.

On yet another note, for the formal night, guys MUST wear SHIRTS, meaning those with collars and buttons, NO T-SHIRTS, POLO SHIRTS etc. are allowed. As for long-sleeved or short-sleeved, that is up to you guys =D

Hey all,

For the youth camp, some meals will be eaten outside (the hotel). Basically, you all have the freedom to choose what to eat, but there is a limit to how far you can go.

Anyway, here is a video showing you some of the makan places available. Note: the video starts at the location where the bus will drop off, so you can find your bearing from there.

There will be a TALENTIME during that night as well so guys, watch out for the forms and sign up fast! Its a first come first serve basis. We will open it again at the camp and then close the registration on the second day in the afternoon after lunch.

I believe the BIGGEST AGENT OF CHANGE is definately LOVE. In the bible, the word of GOd says in 1 Corinthians 13:4
